The pumpkin spice lattes are back. The stores have had Halloween candy out since August. Somewhere in your neighborhood there is already a skeleton on a front porch that was not there last week. Fall is doing what fall does, arriving faster than anyone was ready for and dragging the rest of the year along with it.
Which means if you work in PR or marketing and you have not started thinking about Q4, you are already a little bit behind.
I know. You just got back from CEDIA. You are still catching up on emails from the show, following up on leads, and trying to remember what was happening before you left for Denver. The fourth quarter feels like it just started and there is plenty of time to figure out the rest of the year.
There is not plenty of time. There is almost no time.
October 1st is a deceptively calm date. From the outside it looks like you have three full months ahead of you. What you actually have is about six weeks of productive runway before the industry starts winding down for the holidays, editorial calendars close for the year, budgets freeze, and everyone disappears for Thanksgiving and does not fully come back until January.
I have been in this industry long enough to tell you: I cannot count how many times I have had a brilliant holiday campaign idea in December that we simply could not produce. Not because it was a bad idea. Because there was no time to do it right. The window had closed. The editorial placements were already spoken for. The creative had nowhere to go.
Editorial Calendars Are Closing
Trade publications in the AV, custom integration, and smart home space are already planning their year-end issues. Best of 2026. Products of the year. Industry roundups. Trend previews for 2027.
These features do not happen by accident. Editors are filling them with the brands and the people who reached out, who had a story ready, who were in the conversation before the deadline passed. If you are not talking to your target publications right now about what you want to be known for at year end, someone else is.
The same goes for contributed content. Year-end opinion pieces, “what we learned in 2026” columns, predictions for 2027 — these slots fill up fast and they fill up early. Your chance to own one of those placements is narrowing every week you wait.
Your Dealer Network Needs to Hear From You
The fourth quarter is when decisions get made. Dealers, integrators, and specifiers are reviewing the year, evaluating their vendor relationships, and deciding which brands they want to prioritize going into 2027. They are having the conversations right now that determine where their business goes next year.
This is the moment to be in front of them. A focused end-of-year communication to your dealer network, whether that is an email series, a video, a product spotlight, or a holiday message that is actually useful rather than generic, can do more to cement relationships and drive 2027 specification than almost anything else you do this quarter.
Generic holiday cards are not a strategy. A campaign is a strategy.
Budget Season Cuts Both Ways
Your clients and prospects are in budget planning right now. That is a challenge and an opportunity at the same time.
If you are not already in front of them with a clear value proposition, their 2027 marketing and PR budget may get allocated before you get a seat at the table. A well-timed conversation about what is possible in 2027 can turn a year-end check-in into a January commitment.
The brands that show up in October are the ones that get budgeted for in November.
The Holiday Idea You Think You Have Time For
You are going to have a great idea in November. A smart, timely, well-conceived holiday campaign that would have generated real coverage, real engagement, real results. And then you are going to realize that the editorial lead time has passed, the creative agency is booked, the video production would take three weeks you do not have, and the email list you wanted to segment is not as clean as you thought.
And you are going to file it away for next year.
Have the idea now. Build the thing now. Think about your best story from 2026, a product launch, a project, a milestone, a partnership, and figure out the year-end angle while there is still time to do something with it.
And if you want a second set of eyes on any of it, you know where to find us.
